The Namibian creative industry has lost one of it’s most legendary patrons Simon Wilkie at the age of 58. Known for his work which includes founding Mubasen, Wilkie who was a renowned cinematographer and camera operator passed away in Windhoek yesterday.
Confirming his death, the president of the Namibian Arts union Banana Shekupe told unwrap.online that Namibia lost a giant in the creative space. Having worked with Wilkie on the movie Remember Eliphas, Shekupe says Wilkie was a creative and successful man whom he learned a lot from.
“He was a very special man in my lifetime and I will never forget about him. During the process of making Remember Eliphas, I learned a lot from Simon Wilkie, my brother. May his soul rest in peace,” he said.
Messages of tribute and condolences from other Namibian creatives including Lize Ehlers have since started pouring in with people remembering Wilkie’s work and the impact he made.
Wilkie was known for having the ability to connect with Namibians and finding their stories. Wilkie who also worked on projects including Break the Chain advert as the photography director taught many Namibian TV makers their craft at the College of the Arts.
