Knowing Your Risk Factors

Family history plays a big role in your risk for developing diabetes and hypertension. If your parents or grandparents have had these conditions, your chances of developing them are higher. However, just because you have a family history doesn’t mean that these diseases are inevitable.

Knowing your genetic risk can actually help you make better decisions about your lifestyle. If you’re at higher risk, you can take proactive steps to reduce that risk, like maintaining a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. These lifestyle choices can make a huge difference even if you’re genetically predisposed to these conditions.

It’s important for Namibian youth to be aware of their family health history. Have conversations with your parents and grandparents about their health so you can better understand your own risk. While genetics may be out of your control, your lifestyle is something you can manage.

With the right knowledge and habits, you can take charge of your health and reduce your risk, regardless of your family history.
