Kegumbo Okegumbo- A proudly Namibian film

The MultiChoice Talent Factory launched the Colours of Africa short film series, a festival of African cinema productions, in celebration of Africa Day. Included in the brilliant showcase of African content is Namibian short film, ‘Kegumbo Okegumbo’.

“The theme of the collections of films is ‘Connecting generations through storytelling’ and what is particularly beautiful about the series is that the MTF students produced the short films in their home countries adding local context, voice and visuals to their cinematic expression in the Colours of Africa series. The series also speaks to the purpose of MTF; to ensure that we invest in the next generation of storytellers with knowledge shared by skilled professionals in the industry,” says Cheryl Uys-Allie, Director of the MultiChoice Talent Factory initiative.

Meanwhile, Director of Photography and journalist, Shona Ngava described a director as ‘the creative genius responsible for ensuring that a film is done properly from script to actual product. A director needs to be a people’s person who knows exactly how all areas of the film industry works to make a shoot work in their favour. They make sure the technical team is working at their best and also guide and instruct the talent on camera how to so their job.’

According to the producer, Riejhaat Wolhouter, given that he should reshoot the film, he would try to gain more funding from local investors and time to shoot a better production as he only had a couple of days to shoot the film.

The 10-minute film is a truly Namibia film that celebrates our identity and representation within the African continent. It was shot in a truly authentic Namibian way; during the difficult times of the Covid-19 pandemic and the main language is Oshiwambo with English subtitles.
