Stopping Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Namibia

By: June Shimuoshili

Tackling GBV from Homes to Communities

Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a serious issue in Namibia, affecting women and girls across all social and economic backgrounds. GBV includes physical, emotional, and sexual abuse, often driven by patriarchal beliefs and gender inequality. Women in Namibia experience violence in their homes, workplaces, and communities, with devastating physical and emotional consequences.

To stop GBV, it is crucial to address its root causes, including outdated gender roles and norms that perpetuate male dominance. Community leaders, traditional authorities, and the government must come together to raise awareness, create safe spaces for survivors, and provide legal and emotional support.

Education is also key to changing mindsets. Teaching both boys and girls about the importance of gender equality, respect, and healthy relationships from a young age can help create a new generation that rejects violence. National campaigns, shelters, and community-based programs are essential tools in preventing and addressing GBV in Namibia.

Every Namibian has a role to play in ending GBV. By speaking out against violence and supporting survivors, we can work together to create a safer society for all.
