Women’s Empowerment Must Start With the Women Selling by the Roadside

By: June Shimuoshii

When Namibia talks about successful women, we often picture women in boardrooms, parliament, universities or corporate offices.

But there is another image of Namibian success that deserves equal recognition.

It is the mother sitting beside a roadside stall selling tomatoes.

It is the woman selling kapana under the hot sun.

It is the grandmother selling vegetables, fruit or handmade goods to pay school fees.

It is the woman who wakes before sunrise and returns home late because she is determined that her children will have opportunities she never had.

Some of those children become the first people in their families to attend university.

Some become teachers, nurses, engineers, lawyers or entrepreneurs.

And behind that achievement may be a woman whose own name never appears in a newspaper headline.

This is why empowerment must start at the grassroots.

Women need access to affordable finance, markets, business training, digital tools and social protection. Government initiatives are beginning to create opportunities. The National Youth Development Fund, for example, provides affordable financing and specifically identifies young women and rural youth among groups to be included.

In 2026, the Development Bank of Namibia also launched DBN For Her, a dedicated financing facility for 100% women-owned enterprises.

These are encouraging steps.

But empowerment cannot stop at Windhoek.

It must reach the woman who has never written a business plan, never walked into a bank and never imagined that her roadside business could become an employer.

Your background does not determine your future.

Sometimes the woman building that future is already standing beside the road.
