Having the country on lockdown has affected many, but sometimes business must go on regardless. This has been the case for two dancers, Simba and Viro, who haven’t given up on their passion and hobby during the hard times.
Nsimba Faycal, mostly referred to as Simba, says the pandemic did not stop him and his members from dancing. Like any other job, he says dancing pays his bills.
Simba is a professional dancer, choreographer and fitness instructor, whose dancing career started in 2008. Simba who also works with Equipped Dance Academy, says he is very passionate and will continue working hard. “I have future plans of becoming one of the greatest dancers in Africa. I also want to go international with my career and become an inspiration to other dancers who just started, out there,” he said.
As for Viro Links, a choreographer and dancer from the Equipped Dance Academy the social distancing during the Pandemic has affected his work and thus couldn’t do much.
Instead, Links says he spent time with family while putting moves together and recording incase they get hired any time.
According to Links, the dance industry is not as easy as it looks. “The input is greater but when it comes to payments from the gigs we are hired for, if it isn’t delayed, it is not enough or worth the effort. Some individuals do not respect the hustle that the dancers go through and it is very discouraging because we want to grow big and go international, ” he said.
Nevertheless, Links is hopeful that in the future, Namibian artists get to appreciate and respect the hard work of the dancers and pay them accordingly.
