After months of dedication and overcoming obstacles, director Martin Nakufa is excited to bring his vision to the big screen with the premiere of “GRIEVE.” Inspired by the Instagram page of Seunodine Gooseb, a self-taught fight stunts choreographer, Nakufa found himself captivated by the possibilities of action-driven storytelling.
“What inspired me to write this story was when I came across the Instagram page of Seunodine Gooseb who’s a self-taught fight stunts choreographer,” Nakufa explains.
“His videos amazed me, and I reached out to him so that we do something together. I came up with a storyline and started writing for about 4 months. Using romance I thought was exciting because action driven by romance can be dramatic and obviously exciting to watch on the screen.”
Despite facing challenges with funding and equipment limitations, Nakufa’s passion for the project never wavered. “Funding was a major challenge we faced, with a lack of equipment at times, and having to work around people’s schedules. But passion drove us through these challenges,” he shares.
One aspect that sets “GRIEVE” apart is its potential for a sequel. Nakufa designed the film with future installments in mind, aiming to leave audiences eagerly anticipating more.
“The film is written in a way that can make room for a sequel,” Nakufa reveals. “We want the audience to be left with a lot of questions and to anticipate another part of the film. But one thing which might not be visible yet to the audience is how the drug Lord and his networks made the love affair possible. We don’t really go deep into the love affair, but we really focus on how Mark was really serious as he pursued this woman.”
The casting process for “GRIEVE” took place online, with actors submitting monologue performances based on provided lines. Nakufa emphasizes the importance of authenticity in casting, stating, “We wanted actors that make it believable and don’t look like they are forcing it as it’s easier to work with such actors.”
As the premiere date at the National Theatre of Namibia approaches, Nakufa remains hopeful for a positive reception from the audience. “I am hoping for a good turn up and a positive response from the audience,” he says. “Criticism is also welcome as it will help us grow.”
With its unique blend of action, romance, and suspense, “GRIEVE” promises to be a thrilling cinematic experience that keeps audiences on the edge of their seats.
