With the South African music retail Musica confirmed to be closing their doors in Namibia in May 2021, the news has been received differently by local music enthusiasts.
This was after Business Tech reported that Clicks will be shutting down Musica in South Africa, after several years of decline. Ogopabutterflyentertainment stated that the brand did not support the Namibian music industry and for that, it will not be missed. “They never sold local music so they might as well close. We will not miss them,”
Although it shifted its business model to sell more electronic and entertainment brands, Musica still struggled to keep up with digital platforms and online streaming. Anne_hambuda amplified this sentiment on Instagram writing “Rather than adapting to the times and growing as technology changes? SMH”
Over the years of business in Namibia, only a handful of artists managed to get their music on Musica’s shelves for sale including Lize Ehlers and Gazza to mention a few. So far, only two of the three Musica stores are operating in Namibia which are Musica Grove Mall and Maerua Mall.
Speaking to a staff who prefers to remain anonymous, there was an internal memo that was sent to all employees which stated that the stores will all close for good in May 2021. The memo however not reveal the exact date in May nor did it indicate what will happen to the employees.
