Raising Awareness About GBV Prevention in Schools

By: June Shimuoshili

Educating Youth to End Violence

Preventing gender-based violence (GBV) starts with education. Teaching young people about gender equality, consent, and respectful relationships is key to reducing GBV in Namibia. Schools play a critical role in this effort, providing an opportunity to reach students early and challenge harmful gender norms before they become ingrained.

In Namibia, integrating GBV awareness into school curriculums is essential. Programs that educate boys and girls about the importance of mutual respect, the dangers of violence, and the benefits of equality can help foster a culture of non-violence. Schools should also provide safe spaces for students to discuss these issues openly and offer support for those who may be experiencing violence at home or in their communities.

Teachers, parents, and community leaders must collaborate to ensure that young people are learning about GBV prevention from multiple sources. By raising awareness in schools, Namibia can cultivate a generation that rejects violence and champions equality.
