The Silent Killers in Your Diet
High sugar and salt consumption is a major contributor to diabetes and hypertension, and many people don’t realize how much they consume daily. For Namibian youth, cutting back on sugar and salt can significantly reduce the risk of these diseases.
Sugary drinks, fast food, and processed snacks are the main culprits. Even foods that don’t taste very sweet or salty can be loaded with sugar and salt. Drinking sugary beverages regularly increases your blood sugar levels, while too much salt raises blood pressure.
Instead of sugary drinks, try drinking water or natural fruit juices without added sugar. Opt for home-cooked meals where you can control the amount of salt used. Herbs and spices can also be great alternatives to flavor food without relying on salt.
The less sugar and salt you consume, the healthier your heart and body will be. Small, manageable changes can protect you from serious diseases down the line.
