Magic in May – First ever National Art, Food & Gastronomy Festival

WINDHOEK, NAMIBIA — Creative Culture Investments today announced the inaugural edition of Magic in May Namibia, the country’s first dedicated Art, Food & Gastronomy Festival. Running throughout the entire month of May 2026, the festival will activate Windhoek, Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay — while drawing on the culinary traditions, creative talent, and cultural heritage of all 14 Namibian regions.

“Namibia is a country of wonder,” said Patrick Sam Festival Producer for Magic in May. “From the ochre dunes of Sossusvlei to the rugged Skeleton Coast, we are known for our landscapes. Magic in May adds a new dimension — one that places food, culture, and creativity at the centre of the national story, and invites the world to taste, hear, and feel Namibia in a way that traditional tourism cannot capture.

“The festival’s programming spans five distinct sub-events — Magic Menus, Magic in Nature, Magic at the Market, the Magical Cultural Food Village, and Local City Food Tours — each designed to activate a different dimension of Namibia’s cultural and culinary landscape.

Magic Menus, the festival’s flagship dining experience, will pair Namibian and international chefs with locally sourced ingredients across iconic venues in all three cities — including FNCC and Bellhaus in Windhoek, and Godenfang and Raft on the coast.

Each venue will host a month-long visual art exhibition alongside weekend performances in live music, dance, and theatre.Magic in Nature will transform NWR lodges into immersive cultural and wellness destinations over the long weekends of May, offering curated dining, Namibian film screenings, drumming circles, and live performances set against the country’s breathtaking natural landscapes.

At the heart of the festival is the Magical Cultural Food Village, hosted for the full month at Zoo Park in central Windhoek. The Village brings together representatives from all 14 Namibian regions — showcasing regional cuisines, cultural artefacts, and diverse traditions through daily programming that includes poetry, comedy, choirs, folktales, live jazz, and DJ sets.

A national food competition, the Namibian Region of Food & Gastronomy, will crown one region as champion of Namibian food heritage for 2026.The festival also includes Magic at the Market — a five-week activation of local markets in Windhoek, Swakopmund, and Walvis Bay featuring murals, fashion shows, fitness events, photography exhibitions, and magic shows — alongside daily Local City Food Tours that connect visitors with the everyday food culture of Namibian cities.

A Platform for National Development

Magic in May Namibia is positioned as more than a festival — it is a strategic lever for national development, designed to reduce overreliance on traditional tourism models and spotlight the Cultural and Creative Industries (CCI) as a driver of sustainable economic growth.

By linking gastronomy to performance, agriculture, hospitality, and entrepreneurship, the festival creates new value chains — from millet farmers in the north and winemakers in the Erongo region to small-scale coastal seafood suppliers and urban food entrepreneurs.

Local vendors participating in the festival’s market activations will receive capacity-building support in food hygiene, branding, and customer engagement ahead of the festival.

The festival also directly contributes to youth employment and positions Namibia’s creative sector as a viable pathway for national development — with opportunities for artists, musicians, filmmakers, chefs, wellness practitioners, photographers, comedians, and crafters from across the country.
