Diabetes: What To Eat

By: June Shimuoshili

How What You Eat Can Prevent Diabetes and Hypertension

A balanced diet is one of the most powerful tools to prevent diabetes and hypertension. For Namibian youth, this means eating a variety of foods from all food groups—grains, vegetables, fruits, and lean proteins—while limiting sugary and salty foods.

Eating too much processed food, rich in sugar and salt, increases your risk of high blood pressure and diabetes. On the other hand, whole grains, fruits, and vegetables are full of fiber, which helps regulate blood sugar and blood pressure.

Some local foods can be great additions to a healthy diet. Foods like millet, beans, and leafy greens are rich in nutrients and help protect against these diseases. Instead of reaching for sugary drinks or snacks, try eating more natural foods that are easy to find and affordable.

Small changes in what you eat today can make a huge difference tomorrow. Focusing on a balanced diet is not only about preventing disease but about feeling better and living longer.
