Understanding the Role of Sleep

Sleep Your Way to Better Health

Sleep is often overlooked when it comes to preventing diabetes and hypertension, but it plays a crucial role in maintaining your health. Poor sleep quality or not getting enough sleep can increase your risk for both conditions. Namibian youth, who often stay up late due to school or social commitments, need to understand the importance of good sleep habits.

When you don’t get enough sleep, your body’s ability to regulate blood sugar decreases, raising your risk of developing diabetes. Poor sleep is also linked to higher blood pressure, as lack of rest puts your body in a state of stress.

To protect your health, aim for 7–9 hours of sleep each night. Developing good sleep hygiene can help: avoid screens before bed, keep your sleeping environment quiet and dark, and try to stick to a regular sleep schedule.

By prioritizing sleep, you give your body the time it needs to repair and regenerate, which helps prevent both diabetes and hypertension.
